Mosaic design has the long and vast historical background. A long way back during fourth century BC in Macedonia the mosaic art was vastly used. However in the 5th century the Ravenna became the hotspot of the enrichment of the mosaic art and design. Later Byzantine emperor added the color and dimension to the mosaic art. Archbishop Andrea’s magnificent and beautiful palace was designed with the mosaic art. The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia was decorated with the mosaic design. The mosaic design is very impressive and subtler therefore the beauty of the mosaic art is excellent and mind blowing.
Mosaic art became very famous and well known during Byzantine period. It became the integral part of Byzantine culture. It is evident that mosaic art was enriched and upgraded in the Byzantine Empire from the 6th to the 15th century. However the major portion of the mosaic works was destructed or soiled by the frequent wars, and struggles. Therefore it is very impossible to say to what extent the mosaic art got deep rooted. It is a matter of grave concern that the heritage buildings like the Nea Church in Jerusalem, the Church of the Nativitya in Betlehem were constructed with mosaic art and design. However due to the war and battles, these buildings are no longer in existence.
Lastly, the Great Palace of Constantinople is the burning example of the mosaic art which was built during the realm of Justinian. Mosaic holds back the historical facts and evidence because mosaic design is mainly based on the human life style. It covers the animals and the natural aspects of nature. It is a complete picture in which human life is delineated. For instance, the portraiture of a man with fluent moustache who is supposed to be a Gothic chieftain hints at the Justinian reign. Therefore this type of mosaic art is very useful to get vast knowledge and information regarding the emperors and the then society in several hundred years back.
